Deepening Strategic Ties Between India and the United States

New Delhi, January 8, 2026 — Sergio Gor, the newly appointed US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy to South and Central Asia, underscored the strength and depth of the India-US partnership during his first public remarks since assuming his diplomatic post.

Gor emphasized that despite occasional disagreements, the bond between New Delhi and Washington is built on shared democratic values, strategic alignment, and a deeply personal connection at the leadership level. “President Donald Trump’s friendship with Prime Minister Modi is real,” he stated. “It’s a relationship built on mutual respect and trust that transcends policy differences.”

Personal Rapport Between Trump and Modi Highlighted

Recalling President Trump’s visits to India and his engagements with PM Modi, Gor shared an anecdote:

“During our last dinner, President Trump fondly remembered his visit to India and praised the great friendship he shares with Prime Minister Modi. It’s not uncommon for him to call at 2 a.m.—which, with the time difference in Delhi, might work out well,” Gor joked.

He reiterated that India remains a “critical and irreplaceable partner” for the United States across key areas of engagement including security, defense, technology, trade, and health.

Trade Talks Continue Despite Disagreements

While the relationship remains strong, Gor acknowledged ongoing negotiations regarding the long-anticipated India-US trade deal.

“Trade deals are never easy, especially with a large and vibrant economy like India’s. But both sides are committed to getting this across the finish line,” he said.

Gor confirmed that the next round of trade talks was scheduled for the very next day, emphasizing that even amidst differences, both nations are working constructively to expand cooperation.

A Vision for Strategic Partnership

Setting an ambitious tone for his tenure, Gor said his mission would focus on building an even stronger, more resilient partnership with India.

“As true strategic partners, we must each bring strength, respect, and leadership to the table. No partner is more essential than India,” he declared.

In his new role, Sergio Gor will also serve as Special Envoy to South and Central Asia, further enhancing Washington’s regional engagement. He is expected to present his diplomatic credentials to President Droupadi Murmu this week.
