Fact-Checking Policy

Last Updated: 4 September 2026

NewsBreak24 is committed to publishing accurate, responsible and appropriately sourced journalism.

Verification is an important part of our editorial process. The level and method of verification may vary depending on the nature of the story, the availability of reliable information, whether news is still developing, and whether material originates from primary sources, news agencies, official authorities or other sources.

This Fact-Checking Policy explains the principles and processes NewsBreak24 uses to assess information before and after publication.

1. Our Approach to Verification

NewsBreak24 seeks to establish the accuracy of material facts before publication using sources and evidence appropriate to the story.

Depending on the circumstances, verification may include:

  • consulting primary or official sources;
  • reviewing documents, records, statements or data;
  • comparing information across credible sources;
  • contacting relevant individuals or organisations;
  • reviewing licensed news-agency or wire-service material;
  • examining photographs or videos and their available context;
  • checking dates, locations, names, figures and quotations;
  • tracing claims to their original source where practicable; and
  • assessing whether information has been presented with appropriate attribution and context.

NewsBreak24 does not knowingly publish information that we have established to be false.

2. Source Assessment

Not all sources carry the same evidentiary weight.

When assessing information, NewsBreak24 considers factors such as:

  • whether the source has direct knowledge of the matter;
  • whether information comes from an identifiable primary source;
  • whether an official document or record is available;
  • whether the information can be independently corroborated;
  • the source’s reliability and relevant expertise;
  • whether the source has an apparent interest or potential bias;
  • whether the material is current and presented in context; and
  • whether credible evidence contradicts the claim.

The appropriate source standard depends on the nature and significance of the information being reported.

3. Primary and Official Sources

Where reasonably available and appropriate, NewsBreak24 gives significant weight to primary and authoritative sources such as:

  • government departments and agencies;
  • courts and official legal records;
  • police and law-enforcement authorities;
  • election authorities;
  • regulatory bodies;
  • official company or institutional filings;
  • parliamentary or legislative records;
  • official statistics and datasets;
  • verified statements from authorised representatives;
  • original documents;
  • direct interviews; and
  • other persons or organisations with first-hand knowledge.

Information from an official source is attributed where appropriate.

Official status does not automatically make every claim beyond scrutiny. Where credible evidence materially challenges an official account, NewsBreak24 may report the differing information with appropriate context and attribution.

4. News Agencies and Wire Services

NewsBreak24 may publish, adapt or use information supplied by licensed news agencies and wire services.

Material from established news agencies may be treated as a professional journalistic source, subject to NewsBreak24’s editorial judgment and applicable licensing arrangements.

NewsBreak24 does not claim agency-supplied reporting as original NewsBreak24 reporting where doing so would be misleading.

Agency material is attributed in accordance with applicable licensing arrangements, contractual requirements and editorial practices.

Where an agency issues a significant correction, update or withdrawal concerning material used by NewsBreak24, we will consider corresponding action on our published content.

5. Press Releases and Official Statements

Press releases and official statements can provide important first-hand information, but they may also represent the position or interests of the issuing person or organisation.

NewsBreak24 therefore seeks to clearly attribute claims derived from press releases or official statements rather than automatically presenting all such claims as independently established facts.

For example, statements about a company’s product, a political party’s allegations or an organisation’s achievements may be identified as claims or statements made by the relevant entity where appropriate.

Where a claim is significant, disputed or independently verifiable, additional verification may be sought where reasonably necessary.

6. Breaking and Developing News

Breaking news often develops rapidly and reliable information may initially be limited.

NewsBreak24 seeks to balance speed with accuracy.

During developing events, we may:

  • clearly attribute preliminary information to its source;
  • state when information has not yet been independently confirmed;
  • avoid presenting uncertain information as established fact;
  • update stories as reliable information becomes available;
  • distinguish confirmed facts from claims or early reports; and
  • correct materially inaccurate information when identified.

Being first is not considered more important than avoiding the knowing publication of false information.

7. Social Media as a Source

Social-media posts can provide valuable information but can also contain misinformation, impersonation, manipulated media, old material presented as new, or information taken out of context.

NewsBreak24 therefore does not treat the mere existence or popularity of a social-media post as proof that its underlying claim is true.

Where social media is relevant to a story, our verification may include:

  • identifying the original account or uploader;
  • checking whether an account appears authentic;
  • reviewing the original post rather than relying only on reposts;
  • checking the date and context;
  • looking for corroborating information;
  • checking statements from relevant authorities or individuals;
  • assessing available visual or contextual evidence; and
  • clearly attributing claims that remain unverified.

A viral claim may itself be newsworthy. In such circumstances, NewsBreak24 may report that the claim is circulating without representing the underlying allegation as established fact.

8. User-Generated Content

Photographs, videos, messages and other material submitted by members of the public or obtained through social platforms require appropriate editorial assessment.

Where relevant and reasonably possible, NewsBreak24 may seek to determine:

  • who originally created or uploaded the material;
  • when and where it was recorded;
  • whether the uploader has direct knowledge of the event;
  • whether the material has been altered;
  • whether other evidence supports its claimed context; and
  • whether NewsBreak24 has an appropriate basis to publish or use it.

Where verification remains incomplete but publication is justified in the public interest, the uncertainty should be appropriately communicated to readers.

9. Photographs and Videos

Visual material should not be assumed to be authentic merely because it appears realistic.

NewsBreak24 may assess photographs and videos using available contextual and technical indicators, including:

  • source and provenance;
  • upload history;
  • publication date;
  • location indicators;
  • surrounding visual details;
  • consistency with known events;
  • reverse-image or similar searches where useful;
  • other available copies of the material;
  • credible reporting or official confirmation; and
  • indications of editing, manipulation or synthetic generation.

The precise verification technique used depends on the material and circumstances.

10. Old Content Presented as New

Photographs, videos and reports from previous events are sometimes recirculated online as though they relate to a current event.

NewsBreak24 seeks to check the date and original context of viral material where those factors are material to the story.

Where old content is being falsely represented as current, NewsBreak24 should not knowingly reproduce the false context as fact.

11. Artificial Intelligence and Synthetic Media

Generative artificial intelligence has increased the ability to create realistic synthetic text, images, audio and video.

NewsBreak24 does not treat AI-generated material as inherently factual evidence.

Where content is suspected of being AI-generated, manipulated or synthetically altered, additional caution may be applied before presenting it as authentic.

Verification may involve examining:

  • the original source;
  • provenance and context;
  • inconsistencies in the material;
  • reliable external evidence;
  • statements from relevant persons or authorities; and
  • available verification or forensic tools.

NewsBreak24 should not describe media as a “deepfake”, “AI-generated” or manipulated as an established fact unless there is a reasonable evidentiary basis for doing so.

Our broader use of artificial intelligence is addressed in the AI Editorial Policy.

12. Anonymous Sources

Anonymous or confidential sources may sometimes be necessary for legitimate journalism.

Information from an unnamed source is assessed according to factors including:

  • the source’s access to the information;
  • credibility and past reliability where known;
  • the reason anonymity is required;
  • whether the information can be corroborated; and
  • the seriousness of the allegation or claim.

NewsBreak24 seeks to avoid relying on anonymous sources for serious allegations where the information cannot be sufficiently substantiated.

The identity of a confidential source should not be disclosed merely in response to outside pressure where NewsBreak24 has legitimately agreed to protect that source, subject to applicable law.

13. Allegations and Claims

Allegations should not be presented as established facts merely because they have been made publicly.

Where a claim is disputed or not independently established, NewsBreak24 seeks to use appropriate attribution, such as:

  • “according to…”
  • “the police said…”
  • “the company said…”
  • “the minister alleged…”
  • “the organisation claimed…”
  • “according to the court filing…”

The wording used will depend on the evidence and circumstances.

NewsBreak24 seeks to distinguish between what happened, what someone claims happened, and what has been independently established.

14. Right of Reply

Where NewsBreak24 is preparing to publish serious allegations concerning an identifiable individual or organisation, we may seek their response where appropriate and reasonably practicable.

The nature and urgency of the story, public availability of an existing response, legal considerations and other circumstances may affect whether and when a response is sought.

If a material response arrives after publication, the article may be updated where editorially relevant.

A denial does not automatically invalidate verified reporting, just as an allegation does not automatically establish guilt or wrongdoing.

15. Statistics, Surveys and Research

When reporting statistics, surveys, research findings or studies, NewsBreak24 seeks to identify the source sufficiently for readers to understand where the information originated.

Where material to the story, we may consider:

  • who conducted the research;
  • sample size or methodology;
  • publication date;
  • whether findings are preliminary;
  • whether the source has a relevant commercial interest; and
  • whether the headline accurately reflects the findings.

NewsBreak24 seeks to avoid presenting correlation as causation where the underlying evidence does not support such a conclusion.

16. Health, Science and Financial Claims

Claims concerning health, medicine, science, finance or other subjects capable of materially affecting people’s decisions may require additional care.

Depending on the circumstances, NewsBreak24 may consult:

  • government or regulatory authorities;
  • recognised institutions;
  • original research;
  • qualified experts;
  • official company or financial filings; or
  • other reliable specialist sources.

NewsBreak24 seeks to distinguish factual reporting from professional advice and does not intend general news content to substitute for personalised medical, legal, financial or other professional advice.

17. Politics and Elections

Political claims, campaign statements and allegations are subject to the same principles of accuracy, attribution and verification as other news.

NewsBreak24 does not treat a statement as fact merely because it was made by:

  • a political party;
  • candidate;
  • elected representative;
  • government official;
  • campaign organisation; or
  • political supporter or opponent.

Where a material political claim cannot be independently established, it should be appropriately attributed.

NewsBreak24’s editorial standards apply irrespective of the political party, ideology or individual concerned.

18. Headlines and Thumbnails

Headlines and thumbnails should fairly reflect the underlying content.

NewsBreak24 seeks to avoid headlines that convert allegations, speculation or unverified social-media claims into statements of established fact.

Where a claim is central to the headline, attribution should be included where necessary to avoid misleading readers.

The desire for engagement, search visibility or social-media reach does not justify materially misleading presentation.

19. Fact-Checking After Publication

Verification does not end automatically when an article is published.

NewsBreak24 may reassess information when:

  • new evidence emerges;
  • a reader identifies a possible error;
  • an official source changes or corrects information;
  • a news agency issues a correction;
  • additional reporting contradicts an earlier account; or
  • the editorial team otherwise becomes aware of a potential material inaccuracy.

Where a material error is confirmed, it will be handled in accordance with our Corrections Policy.

20. Corrections and Transparency

If NewsBreak24 determines that it has published a material factual error, we seek to correct the inaccurate information appropriately.

Significant errors should not knowingly be concealed through silent editing.

Depending on the circumstances, NewsBreak24 may:

  • correct the article;
  • add a correction note;
  • add a clarification;
  • update a headline or caption;
  • replace incorrectly identified visual material;
  • update a social-media post where possible; or
  • take other appropriate editorial action.

Full details are available in our Corrections Policy.

23. Independence of Fact-Checking

NewsBreak24’s assessment of factual accuracy should not be determined by whether a person, company, advertiser, political party, government body or other organisation prefers a particular conclusion.

Commercial relationships do not entitle advertisers or sponsors to have accurate independent reporting altered in their favour.

Similarly, criticism of NewsBreak24 does not by itself provide grounds to reject a valid correction.

Evidence and applicable editorial standards should guide the outcome.

24. Limitations of Verification

No newsroom can independently verify every underlying fact in every piece of information it receives.

NewsBreak24 therefore does not claim that every fact in every article has been independently confirmed through multiple sources.

Some reporting legitimately relies on attributable information from official authorities, licensed news agencies, direct statements, documents or other credible sources.

Our responsibility is to apply reasonable editorial judgment, distinguish verified information from claims where necessary, provide appropriate attribution, communicate material uncertainty and correct significant errors when identified.
