Russia accuses Ukraine of drone attack on Putin’s Novgorod residence; China calls for de-escalation, India advocates for diplomatic resolution.
In the wake of heightened tensions following an alleged drone strike on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residence, global powers China and India have stepped in, urging restraint and emphasizing the need for diplomacy to avoid further escalation.
China Calls for Immediate De-Escalation
Speaking at a regular press conference in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stressed that “dialogue and negotiation are the only viable way out” of the ongoing Ukraine conflict. The statement was issued shortly after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused Ukraine of executing a nighttime drone attack using 91 long-range UAVs on Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region—a key area in northwest Russia.
Lin Jian outlined China’s recommended approach to prevent a wider crisis, urging all parties to follow three principles:
-
Avoid expanding the battlefield.
-
Refrain from escalating the conflict.
-
Stop fueling the flames from outside.
The statement reflects Beijing’s consistent position on promoting peace talks while avoiding direct condemnation of any specific party in the Ukraine war.
India Voices Concern Over Attack
Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a public statement on X (formerly Twitter), expressing deep concern over the reported attack targeting the Russian head of state’s residence.
“Deeply concerned by reports of the targeting of the residence of the President of the Russian Federation,” Modi stated, adding, “Ongoing diplomatic efforts offer the most viable path toward ending hostilities and achieving peace.”
India has maintained a neutral position in the conflict, focusing its international messaging on diplomatic dialogue and respect for sovereignty.
Ukraine Denies Involvement
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy swiftly denied the accusations made by Russia, stating they were a politically motivated tactic to damage ongoing peace discussions being pursued with support from President Donald Trump’s administration.
In a statement on X, Zelenskyy dismissed Lavrov’s allegations as false and counterproductive to recent diplomatic breakthroughs.
Trump and Putin Weigh In
The geopolitical tension intensified further following a call between Russian President Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump, where Putin reportedly warned that the attack “would not go unanswered.”
Speaking to reporters, Trump confirmed the discussion with Putin, stating, “I don’t like it. It’s not good. President Putin told me about it early in the morning. He said he was attacked. It’s no good.”
The comments add another layer to the complex relationship between Washington and Moscow, especially as the U.S. continues to juggle its role in supporting Ukraine while managing broader diplomatic tensions.
